The Open Paint Wednesdays meets in the Atelier Copper Room every Wednesday.


Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied to any purchase at Town Hall Arts that day.

November 22 • starting at 10 am 
Autumn Ablaze

Paint this vibrant autumn scene with an acrylic underpainting today and finish it in oil next week.  We will only do the acrylic underpainting this Wednesday, so bring other acrylic projects to do if you finish early.  You will be given a line drawing for an 11x14 canvas and written instructions for the acrylic underpainting on the 15th.  Suggested acrylic colors (these are Golden Fluid Acrylic colors, but you may use equivalent):  Nickel Azo Yellow, Transparent Pyrol Orange, Quin Magenta, Permanent Violet Dark, Dioxazine Purple, Cerulean Blue Deep, and Phthalo Turquoise.  On November 22, we will paint in oils to finish and oil written instructions will be handed out then.  Suggest oil colors (these are Holbein Aqua Oil colors, but you may use equivalent in regular oils):  Titanium White, Cream, Marigold, Yellow Grey, Orange Grey, Caramel, Deep Yellow, Jaune Brilliant, Orange, Rose Grey, Purple Lake, Light Magenta, Rose Violet, Mauve, Lilac, Lavender, Cerulean Blue, and Cobalt Green.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Creating a Backlit Fall Landscape

Learn an easy, effective, and fail-safe way to render a backlit woodland landscape.  Work on any size Arches 140 lb. paper you like.  Besides you usual watercolor supplies, you will need masking fluid and pick-up, paper towels, mist bottle, natural fiber brush, backboard, toothbrush, and tissue.  Suggested colors are primary yellow, quinacridone gold, quin coral, cobalt blue, Antwerp Blue, Winsor yellow, Scarlet Lake, quin burnt orange.   Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Limited Palette Poinsettia

Collage

Christmas Card Collage Get Together

Save those Christmas cards, papers, catalogs, magazines, tissue, bits of ribbon, fabric, and hopeless watercolor paintings.  Collect any other embellishments you have around the house (buttons, scrapbooking supplies, old jewelry, etc.) and make a winter collage with your scraps on a piece of matboard or illustration board, available at Town Hall Arts.  Bring your usual acrylic supplies, matte medium, and a stiff bristle brush for pasting.  Look through your old cards for a simple holiday design you would like to follow for your collage.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Multi-Shaped Flowers in Watercolor

Anatomy of the Eyes

Eyes are the focal point of your portrait.  All measurements are take from and adjusted to the eyes.  Learn how eyelid, pupil, and iris are described by value.  If you like, bring a photo of with clear focused eyes as reference material and draw your own portrait after reading the handout.   Supplies include CarbOthello pastel pencil Caput Martuum Red #645, CarbOthello pastel pencil in Titanium White #100, and 1/4 sheet of Strathmore Velvet Gray Charcoal Paper, kneaded eraser.  All supplies are available at Town Hall Arts.  Follow handout; no instruction provided.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Vibrating Color--Using a Contrasting Underpainting

Come with a prepared square canvas painted entirely with cad red acrylic.  (If you would like a bit of texture, apply a heavy acrylic gel to the canvas first with a palette knife.)  Suggested oil colors:  white, ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson, cobalt blue, indigo, and cad orange.  Bring your usual oil painting supplies, including paper towels or rags, and tape.  You will be given a handout to follow; no instruction provided.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Drawing the Child’s Body

One day you may be working on a portrait of a little boy and you know something is wrong, but you can’t figure out what.  Very often it is the misplacement of the ears.  Learn some tips on the correct way to draw children’s ears.  You will need graphite pencils and drawing paper, or sketchbook.  Bring a photo to work from afterwards if you like.  Also, this is Open Painting, so feel free to work on your own project with us.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Try a painting using only a pair of complements.  Notice the incredible variety of interesting effects that can be obtained using this limited palette.  Choose one of your favorite photographs or work from example. Blurred Edges and Simultaneous Contrast

Learn to combine blended areas with the freshness of stroke marks.  Also read about the importance of contrast and how to achieve this in your painting.  If you are new to pastels, there is a box of 12 assorted colors in the classroom that you may use.
