Doorway in Italy

Another addition for your travel journal!  Layering color over dry paper is a very traditional way to begin your artwork.  Layering the cast shadows in first gives you a road map for a successful painting.  Tracing of doorway is available for 1/8th sheet watercolor paper.  Follow handout; no instruction provided.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Traveling with Pastels

That Old Black Magic

Here is another fun acrylic painting on music.  Bring your acrylic paint supplies, 9x12 canvas, and matte medium.  We will prepare the ground with antiqued music September 13 and bring this back on the 20th to finish with the snowman Halloween painting.  Copies of That Old Black Magic sheet music will be provided, along with a picture of the snowman painting.  Also bring along an unfinished acrylic to work on if you finish early. Starry Night Christmas Cards with Margo Flanagan of Manteca

While some of us will be traveling down Italy on the train this very day, Margo will continue to burn the home fires of Open Paint Wednesday.  Join her on one of her fun projects—Christmas watercolor cards.  You will need a package of watercolor cards, scrap of paper, removable tape, paper towels, and you usual watercolor supplies.  Colors used are cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, cobalt blue, violet, spa green, Payne’s gray.  Margo will show you how easy it is to make your own cards this year!  Beginners welcome.  Cost of this Open Paint this Wednesdays is $10--$5 for Margo and $5 to spend that day at the store.

Zentangle Bookmarks with Margo Flanagan of Manteca

Our world travelers will now be on an island in the Adriatic Sea while Margo shows you how to make charming bookmarks with zentangles. You will need a 5x7 Robert Bateman sketchbook, a Micron .01 pen, a 2H pencil, and eraser. Beginners welcome.  Cost of this Open Paint this Wednesdays is $10--$5 for Margo and $5 to spend that day at the store.

Fun Panda in Watercolor with Margo Flanagan of Manteca

Vibrating Color--Using a Contrasting Underpainting

Come with a prepared square canvas painted entirely with cad red acrylic.  (If you would like a bit of texture, apply a heavy acrylic gel to the canvas first with a palette knife.)  Suggested oil colors:  white, ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson, cobalt blue, indigo, and cad orange.  Bring your usual oil painting supplies, including paper towels or rags, and tape.  You will be given a handout to follow.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Spider Web Watercolor

Get ready for Halloween with this colorful spider-web painting!  Besides your regular watercolor supplies, you will need masking fluid and dip pen or small brush, pick-up, and pencil.  Work on any size watercolor paper you like .You will be given a handout to follow; no instruction provided.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.


Watercolor & Acrylics
October 25 and Nov. 1 • starting at 10 am 
Printing with Leaves

Take your art to a new level.  Combine a loose watercolor painting with acrylic leaf stamping for this unique art experience.  Printing with leaves is an interesting way to use natural materials to create intriguing patterns using the principles of design and elements of composition.  In this two-week session, you will practice the technique of direct printing, tracing, stenciling, layering, and glazing.  Bring interesting leaves!  Besides your usual watercolor supplies, you will need a sketchbook and pencil, acrylic gloss gel medium, gesso, newspaper, paper towels, and brayer.  Also, bring a piece of plexiglas if you have it.  Watercolors suggested are Daniel Smith quin crimson and quin gold; Graham cobalt blue, dioxazine purple, Hooker’s green, thalo blue, and titanium white. November 15 starting at 10 am
Blurred Edges and Simultaneous Contrast

Learn to combine blended areas with the freshness of stroke marks.  Also read about the importance of contrast and how to achieve this in your painting.  If you are new to pastels, there is a box of 12 assorted colors in the classroom that you may use. Plan to work on sanded paper or Ampersand Pastel Boards.  No instruction; you will be given a handout to follow.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

November 22   starting at 10 am 
Drawing the Child’s Body

One day you may be working on a portrait of a little boy and you know something is wrong, but you can’t figure out what.  Very often it is the misplacement of the ears.  Learn some tips on the correct way to draw children’s ears.  You will need graphite pencils and drawing paper, or sketchbook.  Bring a photo to work from afterwards if you like.  Also, this is Open Painting, so feel free to work on your own project with us.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Stamped Forest

We will make tree stamps with scraps of matboard (provided) and load them with color to stamp on your watercolor painting. Besides your regular watercolor supplies, you will need an X-acto knife, paper towels, spray bottle, and masking tape.  Suggested paint colors are Antwerp Blue, aureolin, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, Payne’s gray, and Winsor Yellow.  You will be given a handout to follow.  No instruction is provided on all Open Painting days.  You can also use acrylic paint for this project if you like.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Painting with Complements

Try a painting using only a pair of complements.  Notice the incredible variety of interesting effects that can be obtained using this limited palette.  Choose one of your favorite photographs or work from example. Bring your usual oil painting supplies. Anatomy of the Eyes

Eyes are the focal point of your portrait.  All measurements are take from and adjusted to the eyes.  Learn how eyelid, pupil, and iris are described by value.  If you like, bring a photo of with clear focused eyes as reference material and draw your own portrait after reading the handout.   Supplies include CarbOthello pastel pencil Caput Martuum Red #645, CarbOthello pastel pencil in Titanium White #100, and 1/4 sheet of Strathmore Velvet Gray Charcoal Paper, kneaded eraser.  All supplies are available at Town Hall Arts.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.
