Oil Catch-Up Day—Play with Design

Bring those unfinished oil paintings and work on them while learning the one basic rule of composition that is the secret for designing great paintings.  Handouts available; no instruction provided.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Blurred Edges and Simultaneous Contrast

Learn to combine blended areas with the freshness of stroke marks.  Also read about the importance of contrast and how to achieve this in your painting.  If you are new to pastels, there is a box of 12 assorted colors in the classroom that you may use. Plan to work on sanded paper or Ampersand Pastel Boards.  No instruction; you will be given a handout to follow.

Drawing the Child’s Body

One day you may be working on a portrait of a little boy and you know something is wrong, but you can’t figure out what.  Very often it is the misplacement of the ears.  Learn some tips on the correct way to draw children’s ears.  You will need graphite pencils and drawing paper, or sketchbook.  Bring a photo to work from afterwards if you like.  Also, this is Open Painting, so feel free to work on your own project with us.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Red on Red—Paint the Red Church on Valentine’s Day!

Always wanted to paint the Red Church?  Here is your chance—you pick the medium.  Bring your own photo of the church to paint—there are plenty online if you don’t have one.  No instruction—just painting with friends on Wednesdays.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

Anatomy of the Eyes

Eyes are the focal point of your portrait.  All measurements are take from and adjusted to the eyes.  Learn how eyelid, pupil, and iris are described by value.  If you like, bring a photo of with clear focused eyes as reference material and draw your own portrait after reading the handout.   Supplies include CarbOthello pastel pencil Caput Martuum Red #645, CarbOthello pastel pencil in Titanium White #100, and 1/4 sheet of Strathmore Velvet Gray Charcoal Paper, kneaded eraser.  All supplies are available at Town Hall Arts.  Follow handout; no instruction provided.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.

The Range of the Monochromatic Color Scheme

You might think a monochromatic color scheme means using one color, but the painter can lighten the color, darken the color with black, and neutralize the color with its complement.  Learn to organize values in a monochromatic scheme by making 6 small watercolor studies on 1/4 sheet Arches cold press, or by using 6 blank watercolor cards taped to backboards.  Bring a photo or work from example and your usual watercolor supplies.  Colors you will need are Cad Scarlet, Phthalo Blue, and Black. Vibrating Color--Using a Contrasting Underpainting

Come with a prepared square canvas painted entirely with cad red acrylic.  (If you would like a bit of texture, apply a heavy acrylic gel to the canvas first with a palette knife.)  Suggested oil colors:  white, ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson, cobalt blue, indigo, and cad orange.  Bring your usual oil painting supplies, including paper towels or rags, and tape.  You will be given a handout to follow; no instruction provided.  Cost of Open Paint Wednesdays is $5, which may be applied toward any purchase that day at Town Hall Arts.
